On our homepage, we state that $1.2 trillion in traditional knowledge has been commercialised — without the communities who created it seeing a fair share. Some readers have rightly asked: where does that number come from?
The honest answer: there is no single published source for a "$1.2 trillion" figure. No UN report, no World Bank study, no peer-reviewed paper gives this exact number. That's part of the problem — the scale of traditional knowledge commercialisation is so vast, so distributed across industries, and so poorly tracked that no one institution has attempted a comprehensive accounting.
What we've done instead is construct a conservative aggregate estimate by looking at the major industries that rely on traditional knowledge, drawing on data from the WHO, WIPO, UNCTAD, and leading market research firms. This post explains our methodology transparently, so you can evaluate the estimate yourself.
Why This Number Matters
Before diving into the data, it's worth asking: why try to quantify this at all?
Because invisibility enables injustice. When the economic contribution of traditional knowledge is unquantified, it's easy for policymakers, corporations, and consumers to treat it as free raw material — a commons to be mined rather than a contribution to be compensated.
The 2024 WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge (the GRATK Treaty) was a landmark step toward requiring disclosure of traditional knowledge origins in patent applications. But disclosure alone doesn't guarantee benefit-sharing. Understanding the scale of the problem is essential for designing solutions that match it.
Our Methodology
We examined six major sectors where traditional knowledge underpins significant commercial activity. For each, we identified:
- The total market size (from published industry data)
- The share of that market that derives from or relies upon traditional knowledge
- Conservative and upper-bound estimates
Our approach is deliberately transparent about uncertainty. Where data is strong, we cite specific sources. Where we're estimating, we say so.
Sector 1: Traditional & Herbal Medicine
Estimated value: ~$200–215 billion
The data
The global traditional and herbal medicine market was valued at approximately $215 billion in 2024, according to Fortune Business Insights and Coherent Market Insights. This includes:
- Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
- Ayurvedic medicine
- African traditional medicine
- Indigenous herbal remedies worldwide
- Herbal supplements and nutraceuticals
The traditional knowledge connection
This sector is, by definition, built on traditional knowledge. The formulations, preparation methods, and therapeutic applications were developed by communities over centuries. The WHO estimates that 80% of the population in developing countries depends on traditional medicine for primary healthcare.
Yet the global herbal supplement industry is dominated by multinational corporations. The communities whose ancestors developed these remedies typically receive no royalties, licensing fees, or benefit-sharing payments.

Sector 2: Pharmaceuticals Derived from Traditional Knowledge
Estimated value: ~$300–400 billion
The data
The global pharmaceutical market exceeds $1.5 trillion annually. The WHO and multiple peer-reviewed studies estimate that approximately 25% of modern medicines derive from plants that were first used in traditional medicine. Some estimates go higher:
- A widely cited study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that up to 50% of approved drugs in the last 30 years were derived from natural products
- The National Cancer Institute found that over 60% of anti-cancer drugs originate from natural sources, many identified through traditional use
Applying the conservative 25% figure to a $1.5 trillion market yields approximately $375 billion in pharmaceutical revenue traceable to traditional knowledge.
Key examples
- Aspirin: Derived from willow bark, used for millennia by indigenous peoples across continents
- Artemisinin: Anti-malaria drug derived from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years. Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize for isolating it
- Taxol (paclitaxel): Cancer drug from Pacific yew bark, used by Native American communities
- Quinine: Anti-malarial from cinchona bark, used by Quechua people of Peru
- Morphine and codeine: From opium poppy, used in traditional medicine across Asia and the Middle East for thousands of years
The benefit-sharing gap
Despite these drugs generating hundreds of billions in revenue, the communities whose traditional knowledge guided their discovery have received virtually nothing in return. The Quechua people receive no royalties from quinine. No benefit-sharing agreement exists for aspirin's origins in traditional willow bark use.

The data
This is the hardest sector to quantify precisely, but arguably the most significant. Indigenous and traditional communities developed the crop varieties that underpin the entire global food system:
- Rice: Domesticated in Asia ~9,000 years ago, now a $300+ billion global market
- Maize (corn): Developed by Mesoamerican peoples over 7,000 years, now a $70+ billion market
- Potatoes: Domesticated by Andean communities ~10,000 years ago
- Quinoa: Cultivated by Andean peoples for 5,000+ years, now a booming global superfood
- Wheat varieties: Developed through millennia of traditional selective breeding
Beyond crop development, traditional agricultural knowledge includes:
- Crop rotation systems
- Companion planting (e.g., the Mesoamerican "Three Sisters": corn, beans, squash)
- Soil management techniques
- Seed saving and selection practices
- Irrigation methods
Our estimate
We estimate that $200–300 billion in annual agricultural value directly relies on crop varieties and farming knowledge developed by indigenous and traditional communities. This is conservative — one could argue the entire global agriculture system ($5+ trillion) traces back to traditional knowledge.

The global cosmetics and personal care market exceeds $570 billion. A significant share of products rely on ingredients and formulations rooted in traditional knowledge:
- Shea butter: Used for centuries by West African women, now a multi-billion dollar global ingredient
- Argan oil: Traditional Amazigh (Berber) product from Morocco, commercialised globally
- Turmeric: Used in South Asian beauty practices for thousands of years
- Aloe vera: Traditional medicine and skincare across Africa, the Americas, and Asia
- Tea tree oil: Aboriginal Australian traditional medicine
- Neem: Used in Indian traditional medicine and skincare for millennia
- Coconut oil: Traditional Pacific Islander and South Asian beauty staple

We estimate that $50–80 billion of the cosmetics market relies on ingredients and formulations originating from traditional knowledge. This accounts for both raw ingredient sourcing and the "inspired by ancient traditions" marketing that commands premium prices.
The benefit-sharing gap
Shea butter is illustrative. West African women have processed shea nuts for centuries. The global shea butter market is now worth over $2.5 billion, yet most processing profits flow to international corporations. The women who developed and maintained shea knowledge remain among the world's poorest.

Sector 5: Fashion & Textiles
Estimated value: ~$50–100 billion
The data
The global fashion industry is worth over $1.7 trillion. Traditional knowledge permeates it:
- Textile techniques: Batik (Indonesian), ikat (Southeast Asian), kente (Ghanaian), tartan (Scottish), paisley (Indian/Persian), and countless others have been commercialised globally
- Dyeing methods: Indigo dyeing (West African, Japanese), cochineal (Mesoamerican), natural dye techniques worldwide
- Pattern and design: Traditional motifs reproduced by fast fashion brands without attribution or compensation
- Materials: Traditional fibre processing (silk, alpaca wool, organic cotton cultivation methods)
Our estimate
We estimate $50–100 billion of the fashion industry's value derives from traditional knowledge — techniques, patterns, materials, and methods developed by communities worldwide and commercialised without benefit-sharing.
Case in point
In 2015, the Mexican government protested when a French fashion house released designs nearly identical to traditional Mixe community blouses. No collaboration, no credit, no compensation. This pattern repeats across the industry thousands of times each year.

Sector 6: Food & Beverage

The data
Traditional knowledge underpins many of the world's most valuable food and beverage categories:
- Fermented foods: Yogurt, kimchi, soy sauce, tempeh, miso, kombucha — all traditional fermentation techniques now commercialised at industrial scale
- Chocolate: Derived from cacao, domesticated and fermented by Mesoamerican peoples
- Coffee preparation: Traditional Ethiopian and Yemeni knowledge of coffee cultivation and preparation
- Tea processing: Chinese and South Asian traditional methods
- Spice blends: Curry, berbere, ras el hanout, garam masala — traditional formulations now mass-produced
- Fermented beverages: Beer, wine, sake, and spirits all trace to traditional fermentation knowledge

- Traditional architectural and construction techniques
- Traditional music and performance arts commercialised without attribution
- Traditional knowledge in mining, water management, and other sectors

Not all of this value is "stolen." Some traditional knowledge has entered the public domain over centuries. The issue is not that knowledge has spread — that's natural and often positive — but that the communities who developed it are systematically excluded from the benefits.

The precise figure matters less than the order of magnitude. Whether the true number is $850 billion or $1.5 trillion, the conclusion is the same: traditional knowledge underpins a massive share of global commerce, and the benefit-sharing gap is enormous.
